What You Should Never Do to Laminate Flooring

Laminate Floor Mistakes

Laminate floors do bring a touch of class and beauty to every home and are also more affordable. However, there are some common mistakes most homeowners make with this flooring, and we have listed the top 3 below.

Using Too Much Water

To get a dirty floor clean, the obvious choice is to use water. However, the problem with this is using too much water means it will seep into the cracks between each plank and cause swelling and damage that is often irreversible. A little water, however, can go a long way. For most areas in your home, a dry or dust mop is often all that is needed for cleaning. Sticky or dirty sections should be spot cleaned using a rag and spray bottle without you needing to mop the entire floor.

Using The Wrong Cleaners

Even though it can be tempting to purchase the fanciest bottle of cleaner that promises to make laminate flooring look fabulous. However, don’t be fooled, many cleaners will dull the look of laminate floors, especially when they are used too much. If you have a floor cleaner that you love to use, just make sure that you follow the instructions. It can be tempting to think that more equals better, however, in this instance, it isn’t true. Often, all a laminate floor needs is a good dusting or a light mopping.

Vacuuming and Sweeping

Laminate floors must be either swept or vacuumed often in order to keep them clean. Dirt is the enemy, as it scratches and dulls the finish. However, sweeping or vacuuming incorrectly can do just as much damage as the dirt. If you use a vacuum, make sure that you turn the brush roll off to prevent scratching the surface. For sweeping, a clean microfiber dust mop is more gentle than bristle brooms.
