Tile Installation Costs

Tile Installation Pricing

While both ceramic and natural stone tile installation is considered some of the most durable materials to date, the complexity of their installation often leads to some of the highest installation prices. For example, standard wood, vinyl, and carpet installations are easier, meaning they require less skill and labor. And while installing your tile the cheapest way possible is appealing, it is also important to remember not to cut corners, to ensure the longevity of your tiles.

Pattern Types

A standard straight pattern that has square grout joints and tiles is the cheapest method, the smaller the tile, the less money it will cost to install it. This is because of the weight of the tile and the complexity of working with larger tiles. However, certain mosaic installation jobs that involve multiple cuts can often cost more. An installer’s rate will increase when dealing with larger tiles. A diagonal pattern costs from $2 to $4 per square foot on top of the base rate. For herringbone and other patterns, you can expect an additional $2 to $4 per square foot.

Total Costs

There is at present, no such thing as a “standard” rate when it comes to tile installation, given the almost limitless factors that will influence any given project. Any installer that provides you with a quote site unseen, is not qualified to do the job, as it is impossible to bid on a job without first seeing it and determining all the variables. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to pay more than $75 per hour or more for a qualified journeyman craftsman, more.
