Hardwood Flooring Tips

Which Direction Should You Lay Your Hardwood Flooring?

Everyone can agree when it comes to hardwood flooring that it is absolutely stunning, however, not everyone agrees on which direction it should be laid. As with every update you do in your home before you start it, it is important to first take a step back, and then consider what your options are. Horizontal, herringbone, vertical, diagonal, there are a number of choices you can use.

The most common way to lay hardwood flooring is to align each plank parallel to the longest wall. Apart from the odd exception such as sagging joists, this is the most popular direction to lay wood floors. However, there are other options, and with each one, you need to consider not just the individual room, but your entire floor plan so your flooring will look cohesive as you enter each room.

One of the factors when it comes to installing new hard flooring to consider is your light source. For example, if your room has a lot of natural light coming in, you need to consider running the boards in the direction of the light. Because they are run perpendicular to the light, the light will run across each joint and any variation in the height of the boards is magnified. Running your planks in the same direction as the light will remove this problem.

Generally, hardwood floors are installed in a straight pattern, in order to achieve this, planks are installed parallel to one another along the entire length of your room. Classic and stylish, this design is tried and tested and works with almost any design aesthetic. A straight pattern will also lengthen the look of your room. In many homes, if you run a straight pattern from your front door all the way to the back, it makes the hallway appear longer as opposed to a horizontal pattern that runs across, which often looks like a ladder.
