Hardwood, Do They Have to Match?

Should Hardwood Floors Match Throughout the House?

If you are like most homeowners and are considering installing new hardwood floors, you may be mistaken into thinking that all of your floors need to match. While some people think they should match throughout their homes, it is not necessary. You can mix different types of wood in your home to create a stunning effect.

Choose wood grains according to your rooms’ location and dimensions

If you have south-facing rooms that are large, consider using a darker wood for your floors like mahogany or Brazilian walnut, both of which can provide a luxurious feel. Smaller rooms work better when you put in lighter wood grains. For small rooms, consider using lighter wood grains like maple, white oak, or ash.

When you are choosing hardwood in a long hallway, make sure you don’t install it running parallel to the length of the room. As this will make it look narrower than if you installed it in the other direction. If there is a door at the end of the hall separating the spaces, you can install wood running in a different direction. However, if there is no door continue laying the flooring in the same way.

Separating rooms

If you want different wood grains in adjacent rooms, it is easy to do. You can separate them using wooden borders in the thresholds of doorways. You can also separate areas with different grains of wood. This can be done to highlight specific areas, also try using creative borders. You can try to create a border around the area using contrasting wood using some of the wood grain from an adjoining room.
