Ceramic Tile Installation Mistakes You Should Never Make

Common Tiling Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Tiles are incredibly versatile and practical to install on your walls and floors. However, if you want to get it right, then there are a few ceramic tile installation mistakes you need to avoid.

Not prepping the surface

As with most things, good prep work is key, and this also applies to installing tiles. Whether you are tiling your walls or floors, failing to perform the right prep work on the surface is a common pitfall that will guarantee you have a less than satisfactory finish.

When installing ceramic tiles, make sure that the surface is both clean and level. This does mean you may have to fill in any cracks or dents, or sanding down bumps that are more than 4-5mm. If the surface is especially uneven, you can try applying a new top surface such as plasterboard on the walls or a self-leveling screed on the floors.

With regards to cleaning, remove any grease, oil, or other liquids and vacuum any loose dust and debris. If you skip this step, you will affect the overall performance of your tile adhesive.

Depending on the surface you are tiling, you need to perform additional preparation with a primer to make sure the adhesive fully takes.

  • For freshly plastered drywall, make sure the surface is completely dry for at least 4 weeks then you can apply a primer

  • For wooden surfaces, use polyurethane paint to prime the area

  • For tiling pre-existing tiled areas, you should either remove the tiles and re-skim the surface or tile directly onto them, just check to make sure that the adhesive you use will do this last step

Using the wrong adhesives

It is a common misconception that any adhesive can be used, however, this is not correct. Using the wrong adhesive is a rookie mistake that can impact the longevity of the tiled area.
